I've found installing ttf-mscorefonts-installer THEN lubuntu-restricted-extras normally solves just about all codec issues.

ttf-mscorefonts-installer can be a little awkward to install, so here's the instructions ..

Open a terminal (Ctrl Alt T) and run:

sudo apt-get install ttf-mscorefonts-installer

at some point the terminal will turn blue telling you you need to accept a licence, with at the bottom ..
hit the Tab key so the is highlighted red .. hit the Enter key ..
the next screen will have , again hit the Tab key so is highlighted red .. and hit the Enter key.

It will now install.

When that's finished, install lubuntu-restricted-extras with:

sudo apt-get install lubuntu-restricted-extras

Now try playing your sound file
